Daily Reading

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Equipment Necessary:  items to read that specifically and are of specific interest to you.  Needless to say it is a matter of personal choice and interest.  What may be of interest to you may not be of any concern to others in any means or manner whatsoever.  Specific areas and items may include mysteries, present new and commentary , history , romance novels including what is sometimes referred to as “female smut”.

Suggested frequency of exercise:   at least 30 – 45 minutes per session.  Try if at all possible to do all this reading in one single setting.  If not split it up into as few intervals as possible.   However if it terms out that this is not possible then try splitting up the sessions into consistent 15 minute single sessions per day.  The trick and rule is to be “consistent”  and regular.

While it is true that most people have a somewhat different if not specific attention span and ability to focus when reading , often the background noise or specific environment may be the limiting factor overall.  If this persists in being a problem try conducting the  daily reading “brain booster”  elsewhere at a different location or environment.

Estrogen & Memory Function in Alzheimer's Patients

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Experts have noted both obvious apparent clinical , empirical as well as standard anecdotal evidence of the role of the hormone estrogen and its role in cognitive functioning overall .  Specific receptors and indeed “target sites” of receptors have been identified where the hormone estrogen itself , attaches itself to brain tissue , including but not limited to the hippocampus itself.

Both the presence of , and as well the location of these specific estrogen “docking”  sites serves  seems to indicate as well as substantiate that the female sex organ derived and produced hormone has specific functions and tasking in these cognitive as well as subconscious areas both of brain , memory and brain specific and overall mental functions.

In addition it has been said , postulated and held by many competent practitioners and the medical teams involved in the diagnosis of , as well as treatment of those with Alzheimer’s disease , that  estrogen by itself as well as its interaction with other neurotransmitters of the  brain specifically as well as neurotransmitters produced and sequestered in other areas and organs of the human body ,  may in addition increase the level of major neurotransmitters in the brain areas , that are involved with cognitive and behavioral functions and functioning to a great degree neurotransmitters which may well include but are not limited to   acetylcohline (memory functions and functioning) , noradrenaline ( mood) , and lastly serotonin ( mood).

Estrogen and Estradiol

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Some doctors and  clinicians as well as medical teams specifically involved in the treatment of Alzheimer’s patients are strong advocates of the female hormone “Estrogen”.  What are the benefits pitfalls and concerns of estrogen therapy in the treatment of A;Alzheimer’s disease and Alzheimer’s patients ?

First of all the specific agent involved in therapy , and being prescribed in dealing with Alzheimer’s disease and its therapy is “estradiol” , which is the specific   as well as main type of estrogen made by the female reproductive and sexual organ – that is the ovaries of most women , including those with Alzheimer’s disease.

It has been shown rather conclusively that declining levels of estrogen can be said to overall have a negative impact on language skills, mood , concentration, as well as other aspects of memory – all of which are major markets and hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease and the progress of the disease as well of the deterioration of appearance , presentation as well as functions and social interactions of the poor patient who has been definitely diagnosed and treated for Alzheimer’s disease and its many manifestations and affects.

As such patients – specifically female patients suffering from and being treated for Alzheiemer’s disease can be specifically treated with and prescribed estrogen hormone as a means in improving and increasing cognitive functions and overall cognitive functioning.

Brain Booster Exercise

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Equipment Needed:   notebook or separate essay notebook – coiled or whatever from your local office equipment or dollar store

Pencil or pen

Timer, Watch or Clock

How often to do this  : once a week or so frequency

Suggested format or procedure:  In your notebook or essay book, choose a topic of personal interest to yourself.   Write an essay about it.  Spend approx 30 minutes or so.   Put your thoughts down on paper.  You may want to spend a few minutes putting down some of your basic thoughts  or perhaps a rough outline before you actually start to put your essay down with pen and paper.

Perhaps you will find “writer’s block”  or that you seem stuck for a topic or idea topic area ?    You can pick a more specific topic such as “Why I like cats or dogs ?”  ,  or a broader one such as ” Good health should be a concern for everyone”.   You might even want to write on a topic such as politics – such as concerning new president Obama.

All in all try to spend at least 30 minutes working with this exercise.  Your goals and goals are to stay as focused as possible on the specific topic area or topic areas that you choose and to put down as many relevant thoughts as humanely possible.

History of Head Trauma in Alzheimer's Disease

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

It turns out  generally that whether a history of head trauma or injury is a cause of Alzheimer’s disease of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease is not certain or indeed uncertain by itself.

It can be pointed out that some published studies of repute suggest that head trauma that results in what may or should be considered  a loss of consciousness is a definite risk factor and factors into the risks of a patient developing Alzheimer’s disease.

Thus people who expose themselves to repeated head trauma or injury , such as you might find in the classic cases of boxers such as Muhammed Ali, who developed serious Parkinson’s disease – perhaps as a result of his boxing career, or football players can be said to be , as a result , at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as opposed to if they had not followed their chosen career path or paths.  Regardless of whether or not actual Alzheimer’s disease progresses as a result of the specific person’s health and mental and memory cognitive skill levels-  many such people who are continually exposed to head trauma and head trauma injuries  do go later to more often than the general population , have incidences of difficulties of memory , concentration, speech  and other brain function difficulties higher than the general population overall .

Gender When it Comes to Incidence of Alzheimer's Disease

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Just as in regards to genetics and family genetic history and histories , there are other factors over which the Alzheimer’s patient or family has little control what so ever.

On fact about Alzheimer’s disease that continues to puzzle the experts in the field  is why the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease shows a much higher incidence in female patients rather than in males.

It may appear overall that two factors appear to contribute to this puzzle.  First of all women , and the female sex in general ,  have longer lifespans overall and overall tend to live longer in lifespan than men  and males do.  Hence as a result , women are more likely to develop this disease of Alzheimer’s.   Secondly women generally experience a most dramatic decline in levels of the hormone estrogen  at menopause.  This “event”  could be considered  a situation that if often most associated with memory loss and conditions of memory loss and memory loss development.

Overall though the question and enigma of why women have a much higher incidence of Alzheimer’s disease than males do continues to be both a puzzle and paradox.  Further research and investigations are needed in this area of clinical and diagnostic medicine.

The Right to Know when it Comes to Genetic Testing Alzheimer's Disease

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

Do people have the “right to know”  if they do have the genetic makeup that puts them at high risk for Alzheimer’s Disease ?  The situation is somewhat analogous to patient’s and their families who have family genetic lineages of Huntington’s Disease.

Huntington’s disease  according to the Mayo Clinic :

Huntington’s disease is a progressive, degenerative disease that causes certain nerve cells in your brain to waste away. As a result, you may experience uncontrolled movements, emotional disturbances and mental deterioration.

Huntington’s disease is an inherited disease. Signs and symptoms usually develop in middle age. Younger people with Huntington’s disease often have a more severe case, and their symptoms may progress more quickly. Rarely, children may develop this condition.

Also called Huntington’s chorea, Huntington’s disease was documented in 1872 by American physician George Huntington. The name “chorea” comes from the Greek word for “dance” and refers to the incessant quick, jerky, involuntary movements that are characteristic of this condition.

Medications are available to help manage the signs and symptoms of Huntington’s disease, but treatments can’t prevent the physical and mental decline associated with the condition.

source link:  http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/huntingtons-disease/DS00401

The genetic predisposition of Huntington’s can be easily worked out by test and testing.  Its fairly standard to predict who and who will not in a lineage develop the disease , rather predictably.   Yet will it make any difference to the patient or their families  ?  Will they lead a life in dread or a more productive life.  If treatment or a “cure”  arrives or be developed – then so be it – outside of that person its fairly independent.  If the person was a celebrity they may have an impact in terms of awareness of the disease overall in the general population or medical community or perhaps fund raising as in the case of Mr. Monty Hall who as a matter of principle and promise is involved in many ongoing fund raising efforts.

In this case – the specific family tree line of the Guthrie family , and specifically Woody Guthrie – he has made a specific decision not to be informed of test results and to go on living his life otherwise .  As he points out clearly – what difference would it make to him if he knew the results.

However in the case of genetic predispositions to Alzheimer’s disease there are a number of other important considerations to take into account.

One is the fact that genetic testing for the most common type of Alzheimer’s disease – that is late onset disease – is far from conclusive.

The fact that these tests are far from conclusive adds even more to the mix that a decision either on the part of the patients or their families , to be informed , is not necessarily a good or prudent one , and may do far more harm and stress than good.  The onset of the disease , as a result of all the mental stress and turmoil may actually work to hasten the onset of the disease or perhaps other mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression themselves.  It is not a decision to be taken lightly.

Is it Vascular or Alzheimer's Disease

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s  Disease often and do overlap so that distinctions between the two diseases are somewhat arbitrary – that it is for the clinician or diagnostician to choose.  One may say it is yes , another may so no to the questions and diagnostic query and yet another may say that it is difficult if not impossible to rule out.

This can be a treatment issue for Alzheimer’s patients and their families as in some cases the two neurological or functional memory disorders require different treatment or treatments sometimes radically different in treatment and therapies.

For these treatment reasons for many doctors and treatment centers it is well worth the time and effort involved to try to separate out the two conditions in any workup for Alzheimer’s patients and memory loss diagnostic and determination tests and testings.

For this very purpose the medical workup may use the Rosen-Hachinski Ischemia Rating Scale, a questionnaire concerning and about the patient’s physical complaints, emotional changes and various vascular risk factors , such as whether this patient or person has had hypertension , a stroke or has risk factors or a family history / histories of both.

Workup Test Procedures to Be Checked Verified in Memory Test Workup

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

Other causes and condition that may well have to be ruled out by a component diagnostician in the workup for apparent or believed memory loss as well  may be anemia .  The patient may well wonder why after all this time , that they are being checked for anemia in their blood , and low hemoglobin iron blood levels , when they have not been checked for this condition in many many years – indeed eons – and in addition are well past childbearing age.

Severe anemia can well cause a type or types of memory loss and conditions of memory losses.  In addition many types of conditions from severe hemorrhoids to a poor diet can cause anemia.

Other medical conditions as well as scenarios , tests and procedures  that have to be looked into ,  followed up, checked and verified as well as  ruled out in the process of memory tests , at memory clinics and the like in the workup to the diagnosis of memory loss and in this case to determine , ascertain or rule out Alzheimer’s Disease include:
